UPDATE: My good friend Martin Woodward pointed out to me that, had I done the install without Sharepoint 2010, my memory requirements would be less.  This is a very good point.

The TFS 11 Developer Preview is now available to MSDN subscribers, so go download it now.  In this post, I’m going to show you, via screenshots, the installation of a single-server install of TFS 11.  I installed it on Windows Server 2008 R2 running as a Hyper-V virtual machine.

On the installation media you will find the TFS Install Guide.  I followed its instructions.  First, I installed IIS 7.0 and SQL Server 2008 R2, as laid out in the installation guide.

To start the TFS 11 install itself, I went to the installation media and ran the default.hta file.

001

From here, I clicked the Install Team Foundation Server link.

002

I clicked Continue (If you click Customize the only thing you can change here is the default installation location).

003

Click the Install Now Button.

004

The Configuration Center opens. I chose the Standard Single Server install and clicked the Start Wizard button.

This is where I ran into my first problem, which is that an internet connection is needed to install Sharepoint as part of the install.  I fixed the Internet issue by associating my wireless card with my VM but I still had a RAM issue.I haven’t allocated enough memory to my VM.  I stopped my VM, allocated 4 GB of memory to it, and started it back up.

Lesson Learned: If you are going to install Sharepoint as part of your TFS installation, you must have a minimum of 4 GB of memory on the machine, or the installation will not let you continue.

I booted my machine back up, and opened the Team Foundation Server Administrative Console.

008

I clicked Configure Installed Features

009

I walk back through the wizard, and now I can install Sharepoint.  Notice I still have some warnings, telling me that I need at least 10 GB of memory (recommended).  I click the Install Sharepoint Foundation 2010.

011

Sharepoint was installed successfully.  Click Next.

013

Review the installation information and click Next.

014

The install will perform some readiness checks for you.  Apparently I don’t have all the IIS options that I need for my install, but it will set those up for me. Click the Configure button.

015

The install appears to have completed successfully.

016

Woo Hoo!  TFS 11 Developer Preview is not installed in a single-server installation.

017

Once the install completes, you are taken back to the Configuration Center page.  Click Close to exit.

Next step will be connecting to my new TFS 11 using VS 11.
